that's amazing. I'm a 15 YEAR teacher who just exceeded the 60K mark -- and i STILL can't afford to live here (CT) on my own with my kids. I'll be getting additional "income" from both child support and alimony -- and while i will be able to still live here, our standard of living will decrease quite a bit.

So, WHERE is it that you live? CT is in the top 3 states in the nation for teacher salaries, BUT also very near the top for COL.

The stereotype isn't engineer to teacher, because there is no such stereotype.

My error. It still doesn't add up.

All I know is that my dad just retired after 37 years and he retired earlier than most people at his co. do.

I'm in Georgia.

We just bought an old house to fix up & remodel.

If we were to have to live on my salary alone we couldn't afford the house & definately not the remodeling (it is more than we even anticipated in the first place).

But we could live on my salary in a nice townhouse or smaller home.

We use my salary as play money now so all of the "play" would be limited. But we still could manage to take a decent vacation.

I would think whether one could afford to live on "x" income would hinder on regional location.

You mean we've been arguing all this time with someone who doesn't even know what a stereotype is? That explains a lot.

It's not your error. It doesn't add up. I think Grimal and Op123 are counting in dog years.

LOL. well, i guess you can say that i have bought an "old" house -- it just happens to be the house we've lived in for the last 14 years -- and i'm purchasing it for the mortgage price (well below market value). If i had to buy another home for that same price, i would be looking at less bedrooms then i need, much older home, in an inner-city district or a place way out in the boonies. I will not be able to afford any remodeling -- and will live with 14 year old carpets, etc... for the time being.

even when we were together, my salary was "living" money, Not playing money -- but again, i live in CT with an incredibly high COL.
