Because the SAHM has multiple small children and needs to do an activity with one of them; the SAHM has something related to the household, volunteering or a personal need like a doctor's appt.

the aftercare program at my kids school is heavily utilized by sahps--probably between 1/4 and 1/3 of the kids in there have sahps or pt-wohps who could just as easily have them come straight home. the program provides daily excercise and arts, as well as an optional homework help, and it frequently offers special opportunities to learn things like langauges and dance forms, and participate in clubs like chess tourniments. i have used it when we didn't really need it; my kids want to go to it, and i will probably enroll them a few days a week once the winter weather really kicks in. most sahps don't use it 5 days a week, but plenty of people choose to use it even though they don't need to. good child care is attractive that way.

I also know SAHMs who sent their children to DC because they thought it had a better curriculum than some of the local preschools.

Yes, somthing to do with this litigious society and those pesky sexual harrassment claims.
