Is the SAHM the new status symbol?

In the 70's and 80's women fought to get into the workforce (the whole Ms. magazine generation)...and then the tide turned in the late 1990's when more women started to stay home by choice. Now, it seems like being a SAHM is a status symbol....and superior to being a working mom.

You see, we differ on that fundamental concept. My dh and I believe that being a good person/parent/spouse is what's minimally required to be a good human being. Our goals in life (and what we hope for our children) to go beyond that and do more.

Well, isn't your attitude about garbage collectors just as nasty? Why would you presume equating waiting tables to trash collection is a "nasty" attitude, if you don't hold garbage collectors and the value of the service they provide in low esteem?

Why is it okay for you to be contemptuous of garbage collection, but not for islim to be less than enamored of waiting tables?

That's very obvious. however, strip you and dh of your alleged "old money" and I'm guessing you'd be like normal people then and working to feel secure wouldn't seem like the foreign concept is does to you while you live in Ivory Tower Land.

Don't *need* them as in financial. If it is a desire, blessings and encouragement.

News bulletin: it's expected of WOMEN too! Either you work at home or you get a paid job. Work is not gender specific. That's the whole reason why I can't believe your attitude about life.

And at that, it's only routine at the really crappy hotels. the better end properties frequently have an "only change towels and sheets between occupants unless you specifically request the service" because so many of them are trying to be more environmentally friendly.

I know both the Marriott properties I've stayed at in Manhattan (Marquis and Financial Center) have that policy, as does the SohoGrand. In Boston, the Swissotel has that policy (but my experience is limited there as my only other stay in Boston was long term and we were in corporate apartments). In Atlanta, we stayed in another "apartment hotel" property, and they, too had the policy of changing sheets only once a week, unless you requested service more frequently and they'd only change towels if you put your used towels on the floor of the bathroom; if you hung them back up, this indicated to them you didn't require them to be changed.

Since the men in his family don't seem to *need* jobs for financial reasons, if they wanted to live your life, they would get "blessings and encouragement?"

I don't. The tone of her whole post was snotty no matter what she was talking about. Yes, she was putting down waitressing which is the point I was replying about. I'm not contemptuous of garbage collection, not at all.
