Is the SAHM the new status symbol?

In the 70's and 80's women fought to get into the workforce (the whole Ms. magazine generation)...and then the tide turned in the late 1990's when more women started to stay home by choice. Now, it seems like being a SAHM is a status symbol....and superior to being a working mom.

BUT WHY DO WOMEN GET TO LIVE A LIFE OF LEISURE and men don't! Can you at least explain it - why in the 21st century it's ok for one and not the other gender?

But of course men having been doing that for years, and not women. That's what the feminist movement is all about - changing those outmoded stereotypes.

I don't care if your DH works because he wants to or has to. I think it's terribly archaic to frown on a man NOT working because....he's a man.

You know it is just how the family believes. They feel men shouldn't live a life of leisure. They should work, go to a job. Is that hard? I've said it in this thread but you are asking it again. I don't have a problem with it. None of my sister inlaws, brother inlaws, their children have problems with it. You aren't living it so why would you care? I mean really? Why?

>>They simply don't think men should live a life of leisure.<<

So this is your *family's* viewpoint which you do not share? Because you said below if a man wanted to live a life of luxury he should "have at it" and have his life his way.

I could care less what any human being does with their life as long as it is legal. I don't waste my time worrying about who is or isn't working, living a life of leisure, contributing to society, or what other people think of person's desired lives they are leading. Waste of time IMHO.

It is the family belief. I've never cared enough to really dwell on it. Would you like me to phone Mammy mil when she gets in this evening (gasp, she chooses to work)? I mean, you just keep on...........

My SIl makes a nice chunk-of-change doing it so it can be. I realize it isn't for everyone.

I enjoyed it. I thought it was fun. I had some great people to work with, made some blowing money to take to Europe.
