Is the SAHM the new status symbol?

In the 70's and 80's women fought to get into the workforce (the whole Ms. magazine generation)...and then the tide turned in the late 1990's when more women started to stay home by choice. Now, it seems like being a SAHM is a status symbol....and superior to being a working mom.

Mine is *definately* worth living & I'm having the time of life with a wonderful husband and fabulous kids plus getting to enjoy the pleasures. I see nothing wrong with this picture. If you do. Fine. But I won't change my life to suit your criteria.

OK. Debating is one thing. But you have now decided to just get down and dirty (sorry about the pun in the shower thread).

It doesn't take up enough time to shower. It is just the fact I don't desire to work out of the home and utilize my 2 college degrees. Sorry if that *does* offend you and your criteria.

OK I surrender. We're just talking past each other. You don't think anyone outside your family can or should judge whether your purpose in life is worthwhile, and I think you have to address the larger world and your role in it when you decide your life goals.

"Yes, dh & I feel it is a great contribution to have me available with tons of time for him and the kids. Thankfully, we are able to live as we desire."

Yes, but you AREN'T available with "tons of time for him and the kids". You just said that your children are 4 and 8, and that you employ a nanny. I assume (correct me if I'm wrong), that your children are in school at least part of the day, so why on earth the need for a nanny with only 2 children who are in school and who aren't infants? If you have the nanny there on top of the free time you aren't with them while they are in school, then obviously you aren't available to your children, she is.

So much for your huge contributions.

>>I can't believe people have issues over how many times someone takes a shower, changes their sheets, or washes their towels!<<

Really you can't believe it? It's called *concern for the environment*. Something that you're obviously not all that worried about b/c you don't see your excessive use as wasteful.

I guess you have issues with that scenario? Why if it doesn't apply to you personally? That is the *big* question.

If I thought it was excessive, then I could see your point.

I don't even think your own parents, siblings, or inlaws should judge how you are living your desired life, much less total strangers, whether you meet them in person or on the internet.

I've decided the goals in my life. Dh has decided his. We have decided together. We are moving forward with our lives as we desire.

Outside of church & school, no, we don't volunteer. If you think giving monetarily isn't enough to other causes (which I've stated we do) then that is an issue for you to deal with amongst yourself.

I'm truly curious in a sincere way.

When you were young, what did you "want to be when you grew up?"

When you were in college, what were your goals and aspirations? What did you see yourself doing in the future?

What were your 2 college degrees?

That's what's sad. You DON'T see your use as excessive.

Oh well. Enjoy your thrice daily showers and crisp sheets. I hope it's worth it when your grandkids have to conserve water and energy b/c the generations before them were gluttons.
