Is the SAHM the new status symbol?

In the 70's and 80's women fought to get into the workforce (the whole Ms. magazine generation)...and then the tide turned in the late 1990's when more women started to stay home by choice. Now, it seems like being a SAHM is a status symbol....and superior to being a working mom.

I do what I can. We don't have a lot of extra money to donate places, but I do make quilts and some other things for a foundation for abused children. My dh and help down and out people on a regular basis. (Again, we don't have a lot of money, but we've let people stay the night and get a warm shower and a hot meal, maybe have them do some work around the house for a few dollars) I don't see how having a job would change any of that, except that I would have less time and wouldn't be ABLE to do a lot of it.

Very true...and good point. I still think it is a good CASH income for anyone. I aslo will claim that those areas that have a higher cost of living those waiters are pulling in more than 100,000 a year CASH!.

I sort of agree with this line of thinking, but then again... I have 5 kids. What if my dh did run off with one of the housekeepers that he supervises? Would I really be all that bad off? No, I don't think so. I am not the kind of girl who would let something like that make my life bad. Yeah, it would be hard, and yeah, I would probably have to be on welfare for a little (I mean VERY little) bit, but it is still a doable situation even without a degree. Would my life be the same? Would I make it easy on him? HECK NO! I do feel secure in my marriage, but I am also secure in my abilities. My working status has nothing to do with my security. KWIM?

your missing the point here...Iam not talking about a single family income...Iam talking about a job where yor can pull in 100,000 a year cash money on 4 or five shifts a week. Iam sure those waiters in Manhatten are doubeling this.

Don't get ugly with me. I got your point. $100,000 is a bit of money, but what I am saying is that in some places it goes further than in others. I guess it would also be fair to say that in those places that $100,000 goes further in... well, those waiters wouldn't be making that there anyhow. Whether that was anymore clear, I don't know. LOL! Seems kid of muddled to me, but I can't think of a better way to describe what I am saying.

Huh? I wanted to know where she got her IHOP $$ reference. I'm not claiming to know more about the restaurant biz then she does, I'm just asking.

I'd like to ask you (as I've asked M&T but she refused to answer): do you think that we have unlimited natural resources on earth? We have a water shortage in CA (Alabama may be some day too) yet I see people watering their lawns 3x/day and washing their cars everyweek. Of course, they have the *freedom* to do whatever they want, but it does make me feel that they are being irresponsible. BTW -- I guess that's why you married your dh and me, my dh. My dh also laughed when I told him about this thread, but for different reasons than your dh. My dh feels the same way I do.

You keep saying cash money like it's assumed they won't report it all. That's disgusting. Every dime of my hard earned money is reported.
