It looks like SAH/WOH isn't just for moms any more.

Yes, it's her life, and she has a good head on her shoulders.

You're her mom - you and your DH know her best.

I'm not denigrating dental hygiene if that's what she wants to do -- it's a field where she's always going to be able to find a job, and if she wants to dip in and out of paid employment, relicensure is relatively easy. But on the other hand, her rationale does sound a little lame as a rationale because if you are a dentist, you can also set your own hours and you have much more control over childcare when you have more money coming in. Maybe she's afraid to say, "I don't want to go to college for four years and then get in debt for dental school, too?"

No, she's not dental school material at the present time.

The money part wouldn't be a problem; we've hardly discussed it.

"I just wish the alternative didn't have to be a mainly female field."

But it seems to match her academic interests and strengths.

Well, let me reiterate. There's nothing wrong with being a dental hygenist if that is what she really WANTS to do.

Hygenists make more than physician assistants, they make more than dental assistants & radiologists too.

DH and I both thought about flexibility when choosing our careers.

Here, there are quite a few people (men included) who started with dental hygiene degrees so they could put themselves through dental school.
