I think you shouldn't worry about family and work/life balance at 18 when you're trying to select your life's work.

Some people prefer to work to live, rather than live to work. For those people, it makes a lot of sense to consider work/life balance while choosing a career.

You can always downshift, but in my observation it's virtually impossible to up shift.
