SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

Exactly how do you know that?

Kids don't just learn from their parents. They pick up values from the culture at large, including whatever media they are exposed to and kids at school. So even if you aren't teaching your kids to be materialistic, there is a larger culture out there (including school) that is and you have an uphill battle because your kids will not ignore the cultural messages they are recieving outside the home just because you tell them to. It isn't a conscious process on their part. The media/peer/community value messages soak in and have to be vigorously fought against if you don't agree with those values. And even then, they may override what you are teaching. This is why people care about what other parents in the community are doing. If there is a majority of the community holding particular values that you agree with, you don't have as much to fight against.

No I am basing my personal experience. Are you asking me to show you that a car with 133,000 miles on it has less problems than a car with no miles on it? Really?

***Also I would love to see your stats as well on a city/highway gas consumption and emissions comparison between your suv and the minivan you stated.***

I know what she has told me. I know how many miles she gets on a tank of gas and how much I get. Mine is better. I will say not by much but it is better.

Again you missed the sentence. I will post it again here for you.

***I drive less now than a lot of people do.***

See the word NOW?

So you don't have any data to back up your claims, didn't think so.

Not the only one. Mine has just under 100K miles (97 and change I believe), and I've had nothing done to it except routine maintenance. And its humming along great.

My ds has a Saturn with 220,000 miles on it. I hope my Saturn performs as well.

Car manufacturers are reducing emission every year. Ford started in 2000.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/news/idx/6/027/1999/article/May_18_1999__All_Ford_Pickups_to_be_Low_Emission_Vehicles.html

Here is another one.

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/02-26-2003/0001898010&EDATE=

Scroll down a bit to FAR LOWER EMISSIONS

It says * Several 2003 midsize SUVs (the most popular size of SUV) have cleaner
tailpipe emissions than the average passenger car built in 2000.

In 2004, additional SUVs and other light trucks will meet car emission
standards for both hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, a transition that
will be complete in 2008 when all SUVs will pollute no more than the
super-stringent standards cars must meet.(10)

I would like to add...that I wasn't the one that started the whole environment issue with cars. I really don't care who drives what. I think this is a free country and those that want to drive an SUV or a sports car by all means go for it. I know that the SUV I drive requires me to hit the pump more than a sedan. However it is what fits our family and our lifestyle of traveling. Us driving when we go on vacation is a lot better environmentally than an airplane.

I now have a Toyota Sequoia.

No it isn't hearsay. Why would she lie about her fuel comsumption?

Nor did I say a car with over 100K miles on it wouldn't hum along just fine. But I can bet you that it will need more repairs than a new one will. That is just logic.
