SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

I think it depends on what happened to the old car that was owned for 6 years prior.

Considering that make and model isn't the ONLY reliable and safe minivan out there.. yeah I would think it would be. Bring it down to basics.. you wanted that particular new car, because you need the space and liked the reliability and safety issues. She wanted that SUV because it has the space needed and also the capability to perform how she needs it to when she returns to work in 3 years. If she bought a sedan or a minivan, she would have to buy an entirely different vehicle when she returned to work. That would be more wasteful.

No, of course not, it was though the most reliable and safest one at the time.

All I'm saying that your requirements for a vehicle and her requirements for a vehicle were different. That doesn't make your choice any less or more materialistic than hers, just that you had different requirements. My SUV holds 9 people, get 12 mpg, and has a huge engine. I didn't buy it because I'm more materialistic than someone who drives a Honda Accord, but because I often need to haul a lot of people, or a lot of stuff, and I tow things a lot. Dh has it today because he needs to tow a car trailer.

If I could drive my trucks 10 years I would be thrilled to. However not many cars go 350,000 to 400,00K miles.

If you used it to just drive your two kids around every day to school and back, yes it would be materialistic because it's much more car than you really need.

Depends on how you care for them.
