SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

They still have front seats and it's still dangerous for children to ride in the front seat of any type of vehicle.

Not many people put 350-400K on their cars in ten years, either, thankfully.

I've never had trouble getting ten years out of a car. Our current cars are 8 and 10 years old, and we have no plans to replace either of them anytime soon.

Nice cars are kind of materialistic, yes. I'm sure everyone is materialistic to some degree, but I think that replacing a car every few years qualifies.

No, I don't own any designer clothes. Do you?

What does that have to do with my point?

I don't know. I asked whether you were a sahm because you claimed you needed a truck for your business, yet you're not working.

PKA does have a reason for owning a minivan. She carpools 5 kids to sports practices several times a week. She also says she considered the environment when she did so and that she plans to buy a hybrid when a big enough one becomes available, whereas you scoffed at the idea of paying more for a hybrid somewhere in this thread.

You say you bought your truck because you plan to return to work in the next few years, and you'll need it then. So in the meantime, you're driving around in a car that emits more pollution and uses more gas than you need. I wouldn't feel right about that if it were me, but you say it's your right to do what you want. True enough, but don't expect us to buy that you're not doing anything worse than anybody else by driving an suv and buying two new cars for your teenagers.

I wouldn't buy a hybrid, at least not for another 5 yrs. But my dh is a mechanic, so that "clouds" my view.

My sister has a prius, and she really loves it. I don't think we'll be buying a new car for 3 to 5 years, but if there's a hybrid available then, we would definitely consider it.

Does your dh think it will be another 5 years before the bugs are worked out of these cars?

My kids rode in the back seat when they were 10, as recomended, for safety.

I can't claim any better than you when it is my family, my son's and their friends and their bookbags and sporting equipment?

My dd is very petite. At age 12 she was still too small, IMO, to be safe in the front seat.
