SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

Ain't that the truth. There's a reason people call them F.O.R.D.. Fix Or Repair Daily... Found On Road Dead...Or one that would violate TOS....

I don't have one, but my SIL does. It is a 1994 with 230k miles on it. Still going strong. Absolutely amazing, IMO. I actually thought Ford was the one American brand that was ok. I hate Chrysler.

I drive a Honda Odyssey and absolutely love it. Dh drives a Camry and loves it too. IMO, Honda and Toyota are the the ones to go with. In fact the mechanic that we go to and trust will say the same.

You can check numerous car sites...the numbers are there.

I dont blame you. If I drove a normal amount of miles I wouldn't need to replace mine either.

Again she wasn't carpooling when she bought the van. She also only had 1 child. So what is your theory as to why she bought a minivan? I will tell you. She planned ahead just like I did.

***So in the meantime, you're driving around in a car that emits more pollution and uses more gas than you need. I wouldn't feel right about that if it were me, but you say it's your right to do what you want. True enough, but don't expect us to buy that you're not doing anything worse than anybody else by driving an suv and buying two new cars for your teenagers.***

So I should have bought a smaller car to drive for 3 years then bought this? What about all that energy I would waste producing yet another new truck or SUV? *sigh*

***Read that again, we were out of space and needed something larger than the sedan I currently had...we had a choice in going to a minivan or suv, we knew the minivan would be a better choice all around.***

WOW Out of space with 1 child? What do you carry around with you? Again I plan ahead and you snark at me..you plan ahead because your family of 3 can't fit into a sedan. Got it!

*** Ah huh, in this post you asked, in another you stated something different. It's still unsafe for them to be in the front seat regardless of my oldest being 9 or 10. That's the POINT.***

That is why I asked you. Like you said he is about to be 10. Are you really going to argue this point?

***Most likely I wouldn't have traded an only 6 year car in to begin with, but that's me. Changing cars frequently is a waste of time and resources, as I said, IMO. Thankfully someone rants about wasted energy or we may turn around and find ourselves without energy to rant about.***

When you have a car 6 years doing what I do...get back to me.

I get Consumer Report's every year and I have never seen the Windstar rated the same as the Oddessy or the Sienna. Their choice is always the Oddessy or the Sienna in the minvan class- the winner is usually whichever one had the most recent overhaul.

Please give your source that lists the Windstar as being the same as the other two.

I agree, we all have our little materialistic desires! I know I've got mine, mainly clothes (although I dont necessarily care about designer labels). I tend to covet good quality sports equip and clothing too-it just looks and feels better, and those $100 running shoes and $20 running socks DO feel different on one's feet than the cheapies, lol!

If I'd been you, I would have kept the truck I had for a few more years or bought a used car to use for a few years. Obviously, that's not something you would consider.

I don't see why you would get into a pissing contest with her about this. Even if she wasn't carpooling when she bought the car, you've been driving an suv the whole time you've had kids *and* before. Your suv uses more fuel and emits more pollution than hers, and you've *never* carpooled. So yeah, she's been more energy conscious than you have.

You've been a sahm for 6 years, right? And you say you only drive 10K/yr now, right? But you replaced your car last year. So where did all these miles come from? How many miles did you have on your previous car?
