SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

To be honest...I really don't care what you buy, NOR did I say I currently work out of my car.

I really like the Excursion but I can't imagine trying to drive that thing. It is HUGE!! When I first sat in it first thing I thought was WINNEBAGO!! I love my Toyota it is a great truck. I think one day when it is time to retire this one I will start looking at those Honda Pilots. I really like those a lot too.

What does that have to do with it? She says she doesn't consider the environment in buying cars. That makes it pretty clear to me she doesn't care about the environment.

We have a subaru outback and a minivan, both of which get better mileage then hers and emit less pollution. We bought the minivan, used, three years ago at the time we started needing it. It replaced a honda civic hatchback. Our next new car will likely be a hybrid. We also drive considerably fewer miles than she does, we carpool, we use public transportation, and we bike and walk when we can. But again, it's not a pissing match about who does what. It's about the fact that she doesn't even consider this stuff.

It's not stupid to care about the environment.

Yes, everybody has different needs in a vehicle. So people should consider their needs in light of the environment. Buying two new cars for 16-yr-olds is not about needs. Driving an suv you admit you don't need for 7 yrs is not about need either. These issues are not on her radar.

And, no, I don't walk or bike everywhere. That is not the point. She has admitted she didn't think about the environment at all. I'm sure you are right that lots of people don't. Do you consider that a good thing? I don't.

"I really don't care what you buy"

Yes, I get that. You don't think I should care what anybody else buys, and you don't care what anybody else buys. The problem is, what cars we buy affect more than just our own pocketbooks.

"Most people buy what will fit their needs best."

I disagree. I see a society in which SUV's became cool and trendy and fun. At the time, fuel was reasonably priced and people didn't seem to mind the horrible gas mileage they were getting. Even doing home improvements quite often, IMO, most people would be better off renting a little trailor, etc. when they need to haul something home. I see far too many people on the expressway everyday, alone, in their ridiculously large SUV's. I must admit though, I take great pleasure in listening to them grumble at the gas pump, lol.

I live in a western state, and I think suvs have become part of the "cool" culture here, too. I see people who don't even ski or camp driving these things and claiming they need them for going to the mountains.

***What does that have to do with it? She says she doesn't consider the environment in buying cars. That makes it pretty clear to me she doesn't care about the environment.***

So I will ask AGAIN. Do you think because someone buys an SUV or a truck that automatically means they don't care about the environment? There are so many other issues when it comes to the environment, i.e. recycling, planting trees, composting, etc. You seem stuck on cars.

***We have a subaru outback and a minivan, both of which get better mileage then hers and emit less pollution.***

Why do you need a minivan when you only have two kids? For someone that is ranting about driving an a SUV when I don't really need it you certainly are driving a minivan when you would do just fine with a sedan.

***We also drive considerably fewer miles than she does,***

You drive less than 10K a year?

Please tell me when I admitted that I didn't need my SUV?

I am still waiting for you to answer my question about PKA driving a minivan when she only had 1 child and didn't carpool. I guess you aren't going to answer that one. *shrug*

Again you can care all you want to. This is a free country and people are allowed to buy what they want. Just like someone that buys a 5,000 sq ft home when there are only 3 people living there. That is life, if you want to care about something...care about something you can actually do something about. Go plants trees, and work on recycling in your community. Cars and homes are people's rights to buy what they chose. Getting all worked up over it isn't going to change that reality ever.
