SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

I was asked a question, and I answered it. What's getting really silly is your knee-jerk defense of anything to do with suvs.

Luckily, there are a whole lot of options between driving exactly what you want without even considering the environment and not having a car at all. It's funny how you have to turn this into an extreme. I've said numerous times in this thread that there are many families who are doing more for the environment than mine, and I'm happy to say it again. However, we have considered the environment in deciding what cars to buy, whether to carpool or use public transportation, etc., and I think that's a perfectly reasonable thing for anyone to do, within their own circumstances. If believing we all need to care more about the environment than we do equates to making myself judge, jury, and executioner, I can live with it.

I'm really wondering why you want to defend someone who says she has never even considered the environment in buying a car and sees no reason to do so. I know you've said that you don't think most people do, but is that a good thing in your book?

Did you read? Or are you purposely just trying to be argumentative? I said removing fixtures was one of the many things we did to this house.

***With the dummies sustaining only minimal "injuries," Windstar strengthened its claim to be the most crashworthy minivan, scoring first-ever five-star ratings (five is best, one is worst) in front-end and side-impact collision tests.

No other car or truck has achieved the top ratings for driver and passenger protection in government safety tests. Some have earned five stars in front-end crashes, and a few have done so in side-impacts. But Windstar scored the first set of four perfect fives.***

Sounds like that is pretty much what I said?

I don't think it matters, and I don't think my response is "kneejerk". I think you are villifying someone for no reason. You are continually saying that her reasons for having such a vehicle either don't exist, or that she is lying. Then you go on and prove you really don't know anything about cars at all. All I am saying is that from my perspective, your decision to drive what you drive isn't any better than hers. She has demonstrated why she needs what she does, and I think she made a pretty good choice environmentally considering the needs she has. (Regardless of if she specifically thought about it at the time) You have provided no links to a better vehicle with similar specs, you have only said you think that her reasons are stupid.

In this part of the thread, I responded to jzy's comment about needing to put all your fixtures in a trailer, and snoopy responded to that. The discussion was about why she needs to tow things. I've already acknowledged that she can't tow a boat with an suv, but I don't get why towing a trailer is so important that she needs an suv. She says here that it's important because she's remodeled her house once in 9 years. It's hard for me to see that as a reason you need to own an suv for 7 years.

The only reasons she has given me for owning an suv are that she needs the suv for work (sounds like that is true, but she's been a sahm for 6 years) and she needs to be able to tow trailers (since she's not working, the trailers would now be for remodeling or yardword). I pointed out that she could use another vehicle for that.

The real reason she has an suv is because she wants one. It's convenient for her and she wants to be able to tow her boat. I get it.

No.

Why does a sahm (your current profession) need an suv?

Nope, already provided you with links for that.

No and no.

Yes I do. I know when a car has too many miles on it you might as well trash it to the junkyard. They will give you more for it than anyone else.

This thread is too long to go over it again. You will catch up and see.

Depends on what size camper you are pulling. I don't think it is recommended that you pull that camper behind your van. UP TO 3500lbs is subjective. Ask your Honda dealer before you buy. Especially with the mileage you already have on that van. I don't think it is going to do what you think it will.
