SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

I couldn't go down that road either.

Why not buy a used minivan to drive for a few years until you need the bigger vehicle? I just think decisions that result in somebody driving a bigger car than they need for 7+ years are not very thoughtful. YMMV.

That would be knee-jerk, but I didn't do that. She told me she didn't need it. You have a nice day too.

***She says here that it's important because she's remodeled her house once in 9 years.***

Umm where did I say that? I said I replaced the fixtures ONCE in the last 7 years. We have owned the house 9 years. We are still remodeling this house.

*** The only reasons she has given me for owning an suv are that she needs the suv for work (sounds like that is true, but she's been a sahm for 6 years) and she needs to be able to tow trailers (since she's not working, the trailers would now be for remodeling or yardword). I pointed out that she could use another vehicle for that.***

What other vehicle did you point out? Do you have any idea what you are talking about? The towing capacity of a Honda Pilot couldn't tow our boat. You really are working on nothing here. If you want to give me suggestions you think are valid then lets know what you are talking about.

***No.***

You are correct. You had 2 children. I toddler and 1 infant. A minivan is still large for 2 children. However I personally would have bought one myself.

***Why does a sahm (your current profession) need an suv?***

I just bought this one a year ago. I will be returning to work next year. I wasn't going to buy a minivan then turn around and buy this 2 years later.

***Nope, already provided you with links for that.***

Sure you are. You drive more than me.

***No and no.***

Yes you do. You said you have over 100K miles on your 1999 minivan. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say your van is 6 years old. That is 16,600 miles on your minivan. I drive and have driven about 10K miles per year for the last 3 years.

I didn't just have one child when we bought the minivan.

As an old home owner myself, I love our old fixtures, they are classic and horribly expensive to replace with something identical.

What large items does an average family have to move on a consistent basis?
