SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

I think it would depend on the make, model and year of the car and not just across the board statement.

I still don't understand your assumptions.

You did say what I claimed you did, I just paraphrased. If you weren't offering that information is response to what you think she should be able to tow with minivan, then you would have had no reason to post it at all.

Your choice may be better overall, but it's far worse than someone who is driving a Prius, or who rides a bike, or drives any number of vehicles that have better mileage and emissions. My choice is far better than your choice when it comes to the vehicle needs I have. You can't compare directly because the needs aren't the same. The fact is, you, me mom3401, snoopy, we all have vehicles that by far don't have the best gas mileage and emissions. That you think that you can say "I bought so and so a car even though it doesn't have fabulous mpg and emissions because of reasons A,B,C", but discount snoopyme's reasons basically because they aren't your reasons is blindingly hypocritical. Apparently she should be driving something with better gas mileage because what she needs a vehicle to do can be accomplished in other ways (albeit totally not cost effective, and not easy in the least bit), but the same doesn't apply to you or anyone else.

That is right. About 10K per year. Not less than. NO need for apologies. No one can possible keep up with every post on this board or everyone's habits.

***How do you know the engine is wearing and the transmission slips? Does this happen in all suv's?***

Any engine with high miles is wearing. That particular one had been used a lot when I worked. I then had a child. I got pregnant when I had that one (a second time) and drove a lot of miles to and from the doctor, and then when she was born to the pediatrician.

***So you believe that the manufactures only intend for suv's to be driven a certain number of miles before they need to be replaced because of the engine wearing and the transmission slippage?***

No I wouldn't take it that far. However I will say when you use the SUV's the way I did they do wear much faster. Anytime you haul large trailers or cargo you put a lot more wear on them than if you just used them as a family vehicle.

No I don't, and I've never said such a thing. I've said that snoopyme does, because she SAID that she does.

When it comes to resale value of cars, I'm pretty well versed, so I'm not making assumptions.

SM: "Tow my trailer with your minivan or a sedan. You will be buying a new one very quickly."

YOU: "We have towed a trailer (many times) with the sedan, it's still going with over 250K miles on the car and is an 89 model. I have a friend who regularly tows their camper with an Odyssey, and it's still going strong.

Perhaps it's an operator problem and not a car problem?"

ME: "Perhaps they are just lucky, or are towing trailers that don't weigh much. Towing a trailer that weighs more than the weight recommendation on your vehicle is just plain stupid."

YOU: "Where did I say they were towing more than what is recommended? Give me a break and don't jump to assumptions, kay?

A versions of what you said to someone else....Just because you need to tow very very heavy loads that doesn't mean everyone does or even wants to. Sometimes you just need to tow a trailer and yes they make trailers that don't require an suv to tow or isn't over the recommended amount."

Answer to the question "Where did I say that they were towing more than what is recommended?" would be, when you replied to "Tow *my* trailer with a minivan or sedan. You will be buying a new one very quickly" with "I have a friend who regularly tows their trailer...." implying that you were talking about a similar sized trailer as to what snoopyme tows. If you weren't you were just relaying useless information, and I don't see why.

***Where did I say they were towing more than what is recommended?***

She didn't say you did.

***Give me a break and don't jump to assumptions, kay?***

She didn't jump to assumptions. I believe she clearly said...

Perhaps they are just lucky, or are towing trailers that don't weigh much.

***A versions of what you said to someone else....Just because you need to tow very very heavy loads that doesn't mean everyone does or even wants to.***

I don't think she thinks they do. Nor do I. I never implied that anyone would do what I do. Nor has charlesmama.

***Sometimes you just need to tow a trailer and yes they make trailers that don't require an suv to tow or isn't over the recommended amount.***

Well to be honest you posted that and it seemed to be comparing these trailers you were speaking of and what I tow. I don't think that is necessarily what you meant now that I have read this. However in the OP that is really how it sounded.

I don't know? You list one of your main reasons for buying a minivan because you carpool. How often do you do that?

But you bought that minivan because it fits YOUR families needs. That is why she bought her Suburban and I bought my Sequoia. It isn't just about the environment. We could all make better choices than we do when it comes to cars. However we tend to put our families or personal needs above everything else.
