SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

I don't tell them to get dressed. They do have to be told when to get in the shower. We eat at different times in the evening, and sometimes they need to get in right after dinner sometimes they don't. So when I say shower time they go. They dress themselves, and brush their own teeth. My little one will say...Mommy I want to go to bed. She is a routine kid about sleep. She will go to bed on her own. My DS knows what time the clock says when it is bedtime. He tells us that he wants one of us to tuck him in and he goes to bed. What questions?

I believe I told you 200+ posts ago that the our school is exempt from the county regulations. This is because it is a religious school. So I can't post you anything on how it is governed without posting my son's school website link. I am not going to do that.

If you don't do what your boss says, you can be fired. Any attempt to use that disciplinary method with children will land you in jail for abandonment. Bosses have a discipline tool parents aren't allowed to use (firing) and parents have a discipline tool bosses aren't allowed to use (spanking). You can't really try to make them into analogous situations.

Why is different for kids? Because parents are FORBIDDEN to use the one effective tool that bosses have- firing.

She can let her children go out in the cold without a coat. Mine aren't. They can make the decision whether to go or not. To be honest neither really say much about wearing a coat. When we get ready to go somewhere they just grab their coats like they see my DH and I doing. It isn't an issue in our home. Sometimes they will ask if they need a coat and I will tell them if I think so or not. The topic for me was a hypothetical.

NOt only that .. but the counties are governed by a board of commissioners (or councilmen) and the schools within those counties are governed by a school board. Different legal entities ... even though the legal entities both use the same geographical boundaries.

Isn't insisting they wear a coat when they don't want one telling them what to think about the weather and their own state of warmth? I want my kids to learn to make good choices for themselves. I want them to put on a coat because it's cold out, not because mom says they have to. Taking responsibility for yourself starts with making small choices, like whether to wear a coat or not, and works up to the big choices they'll be making when they are teenagers.
