SAH/WOH - Why?
| Mon, 02-20-2006 - 7:41am |
I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.
Why did you decide to sah/woh?
Was it a choice or something expected of you?
Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

I never thought of it as a "smarts" thing, just a method that seems to work for a lot of kids, though I am absolutely sure not for all.
To all the posters who are advocating spanking as a disciplinary measure and the pster who told her child to hit back if another child hit him/her, a wwyd:
What would you do if your child hit you while you were spanking him/her? How would you "teach" him not to hit you?
Turtleneck + long-sleeved shirt?

I'd guess that such carjackings are vanishingly rare, but if anyone else knows of any statistics I'd be very interested to see them.
The same way anybody knows what the weather is going to be. We have an outside thermometer, so I usually suggest my kids check the thermometer if they ask me what the weather is like. It's good math practice. I've also shown my 9-yr-old where to find the weather report in the paper.
The weather here is very changeable, so having a sweater in your backpack is always a good idea even if it seems warm when you start out. Sometimes I make suggestions, but if the kids don't follow them, I don't say anything. If my kids wanted to wear short sleeves to school, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I'm not the one who's going to be cold at recess. Occasionally my 6-yr-old will wear something that's not weather-appropriate and then realize it's colder than she thought as we're going out the door and go back for a sweater.
I know a parent who isn't comfortable sending her kids to school in short sleeves either, so she made a deal with her kids that they can wear short sleeves when the thermometer is above a certain point. They check the thermometer if there's any question. Like any method of discipline, you can adopt this one to suit your own foibles. Or if you want to rescue them, you can tell them they can wear short sleeves but they have to take a sweater in their backpack. I'm okay with letting them figure it out for themselves.
