SAH/WOH - Why?

I am sure this has been done before but I was wondering this in light of recent posts lately.

Why did you decide to sah/woh?

Was it a choice or something expected of you?

Was your plan to sah/woh though out or impulsive? Long-term or short-term?

Stroller or cart. Surely you could pick him up to put him in the cart or the stroller. And if it's really unsafe to take him to the store, I don't see how you would have the luxury of taking him along. Didn't he try this more than once, even after you spanked him?

Sometimes disciplining your kids is inconvenient.

Absolutely. I think spanking for misbehavior in the parking lot is taking the easy way out. And all of the simple suggestions here from boardies about how to keep a child safe in a parking lot will be discounted if one has a particular mindset.

Whatever it is that you do to punish your children for bad behavior.

I would be hard-pressed to find such statistics. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even exist. It's common in the US to simply circle once or twice and have an ounce of patience to get a parking space close to a store; in the alternative, it's common to park right next to one of several shopping cart drop-off areas so the child's chance to bolt is diminished. I don't doubt Sweden has similar options.

Yes, it does. I usually manage to park near the drop-off for the carts.

My mistake. I missed the "Swiss" in your second post and thought you were still talking about Sweden.

I think social services would probably come after me if I let my kids walk themselves to school here. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that in any case.

IMO, spanking is abusive and wrong. It shouldn't be used on a regular, planned basis as part of an overall disciplinary approach. But it happens sometimes when parents lose control. When it does, parents might want to consider telling their kids they made a mistake. I don't think it's a big problem if it happens, say, a few times during someone's childhood.

Last year a lady at the WalMart left her infant DD in the car while she put her cart in the cart area. She was only 5 car spaces away. A woman ran up to her car took her baby and sped off. The mother saw what was happening and grabbed hold of the abductors car. She held on about 20 sec but was thrown off and badly injured. Thank GOD it was caught on the parking lot video. The lady was captured about 3 hours after she abducted that baby. I would NEVER leave my child in a car unless I was parked next to the return area.
