Salary Negotiations - are Women as Good as Men?

According to a recent study, women can be just as good, if not better, at negotiating their salary as a man if it's made clear that it's open for it.  If not, then men are more likely to start negotiations with the hiring company:

"When the rules of wage determination are concrete, women are more likely to negotiate," study co-author Andreas Leibbrandt of Australia's Monash University told NBC News.

What's up with that?

Victoria Pynchon, co-founder of She Negotiates Sales and Training, a Los Angeles consultancy that coaches women on asking for better pay, says women "are still grateful to be offered a job" and that if they ask for more money, they're worried the job offer will be retracted. Women are taught, says Pynchon, that "if a woman asks for something for herself, she's likely to be punished."

What do you think about women being worried that if they ask for more money they won't get the job, do you think that men have these same concerns?  How are you are negotiating your salary?

Eh, My husband has had enough jobs to know that you don't accept the first offer off the bat, There's always something to negotiate - from pay to benefits, etc. This makes it sound like women are weak and can't do that, If they are so be it but I doubt women in important roles are there b/c they don't know how to negotiate.

So much of this sort of thing is a game you just have to know how to play. Women aren't always aware of the game and since it's systemic, other women aren't teaching them the unwritten rules of business. This is a trend that will likely disappear in time, however, for women in competitive fields.

I haven't been put in a position to have to negotiate, since my job has always paid at the comparable rate to others in my field, but I can understand being hesitant to negotiate especially in today's job market.  I also think that women tend to under rate themselves when it comes to their self-worth.

I'm just curious if your husband was job hunting today if he would be so quick to negotiate? It's a scary job market, and when there might be dozens or more people up for the same job you can't be too picky.

Very good point, rhpearson1. I hope that the trend disappears over time.

I'm just putting this here, because I was testing if I could post a reply.  Two minutes ago I tried on another board and it said I wasn't authorized.  When I tried here, I had to log in again, but it worked.

Is is just me, but wouldn't it be nice to have an indication that there are new replies that you haven't read?  This  just takes you to the beinning of the post every time.  Maybe it won't be a problem, because I can't see too many monster posts in the future of these boards.

This has been requested by other members, and it's on the list for our tech team to take a look at to see what needs to happen to have that feature. They are trying to knock out some of the issues like what you ran into with logging in (are you trying from a mobile device?), and then will have a chance to take a look at some of the functionality.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll pass it on to the team.
