Our kids get three recesses per day. One in the morning, one before or after lunch (depending on the grade level), and one in the afternoon. 20 min each I think. I'm very glad our school hasn't gone the route of eliminating recess; many district have and I think it's awful.
I dunno. Part of it could be that our school (district wide) has a loose policy of no homework at the elementary level. They expect most of the work to be finished in class. They have exceptions for large projects, daily/weekly reading, studying for spelling tests, etc. Also, any work not completed in class by a particular student is expected to be done at home. I'm torn on this policy. I like the concept, but when Sav hits 6th grade next year and has significant homework, it could really disrupt things, because she's not used to having any and her study habits aren't that great.
If my cleaning lady stole from me held herself accountable for her mistake, i would still trust her.
If i found my nanny drunk on the couch i would have to let her go and find another one.
Your right i do not know exactly what is going when iam not home, however i refuse to live my life in a non trusting bubble b/c of others own problem's. I will learn from my own experiences, not the word of anothers experience.

Elementary school includes 6th grade here, and I like homework every night starting in first grade like we have it.
They don't. They shouldn't be doing things for an hour at a time. Developmentally children can't concentrate for that long. They need the break. In Cal's class, they do things in about 20-30 minute increments. That's about as long as a class full of 6yos can concentrate without needing a physical and mental break/refresher. Sav's class does things in longer time frames, but infrequrently for an hour or more on one subject.

I disagree with that policy, I think children should have a routine outside of the classroom.
