I would agree with that. However I think kids need to learn that there are consequences for not completing their homework. If my son chose not to do his homework then he would spend a very quiet evening at home. Not to mention the trouble he would get into a school for not doing it. He knows this and has always willingly done his homework. LOL!

LOL! there are PLENTY of consequences here. I must be the "consequence Queen". However, once they are in high school, you will not know when they haven't completed homework unless you call to get an update from the teachers or get a progress report home (as most schools probably don't use online grading yet).

when we found out that my son was failing bio and then later found out he was on his way to a D in computers and a C- in spanish, the hammer fell -- cell phone-gone, playstation-gone, new guitar-hero playstation game-gone, computer/internet-gone, guitar lessons-gone. He also now stays after school two days per week to get help in either biology or spanish. When his quarter grades come in, we will see if he's brought them up enough to earn any of those privileges back.

Luckily, his Dad has backed us all the way on this -- so my son has 3 parents in a united front. Our mantra "schoolwork comes first".

Speaking as the mother of a dd (Angela) who failed 9th grade and had to repeat it, sometimes failing a grade is what it takes to make a student shape up and realize that school is their own responsibility and that it does all rest with them. I have seen the same turn around with Dylan since he failed his purple belt evailuations in Karate.

i understand that. He also understands that if he doesn't pass bio that he has to go to summer school and take the same class again - with the same teacher -- for 4 hours per day. If I thought that repeating a grade would make him "shape up" i would let him fall, but i know him really, really well -- he would downward spiral completely and blame it on everybody else (par for the course for ADHD kids) -- and it would NOT have a positive effect on him for the following year.

he also knows that if he takes summer school, he will not be able to get a job nor will he be able to come on our vacation to NJ. he also will not be able start driver's ed in the fall (he'll be 16 in August).

My wife and I are both healthcare workers. My wife is a nurse and I am an EMt and we both work full-time but one of us is with the kids at all times since we ARE WORKING OPP SHIFTS. We are able to go buy our kids anything they ask for and give them a great life because of it,lives that we did not have growing up dirt poor. We have 5 cars,a big house,a big mortgage, and all the perks all because we refused to keep one parent at home. The cost of living is just to much and if you want a good life you need to make alot of money. We would never leave our kids with a sitter either but that is just us and our constitutional rights as Americans.

That is FABULOUS! I totally agree with what you did. I would do the exact same thing.

Yeah, like everything else, not all consequences work for all children. The ones facing your ds sound like serious consequences.

I know the main purpose of your post was to spam (which has been reported) but why do you see "go buy our kids anything they ask for" and "a big mortgage" to be good things.

I must say that I know nurses (depending on where you live) can make BIG BUCKS. However I have never heard of an EMT making big dollars, and able to have a big mortgage, and able to buy their kids anything they ask for. May I ask what your income range is, and how big is this mortgage you have?
