I would think it would be very hard to learn to read or add numbers if you had to stop after 30 minutes.

Yes, that includes 20 minutes of reading time, but excludes work on long term projects.

If Peter finished all his classwork, he'd probably have only 40 minutes a night including his 20 mins. of reading.

Very similar here, math, spelling and reading nightly and occasionally science or social studies.

I disagree somewhat in that I can tell from the homework, and the practice tests they do in reading comprehension and math at home, how Peter's doing in those subjects.

you've been quoted as saying that you don't bug your kid wrt homework as long as he gets a 90 or above. great if doing it himself is how you think he learns responsibility. but that is indeed a measuring device (or stick. my word) that determines your involvement with him.
