My oldest son is doing the same thing, i can certainly listen to what he is are reading about even if it is a book i have never read or have not read in years. i do it all the time, he either refreshes my memory or he shares to me what he is reading/learning about. We enjoy this time together and I think becasue of the way we have choosen to have structure and routine into this and made homework a focus of our llives we have created very responsible children.
our school stopped doing science fairs because so much of the work was being done by parents. itis really sad, because when left alone kids really do come up with some great things. Jennie
Of course they change often but do you not choose the things that work the best for family during the change and into the next phase? I know i do...if something is not working positivley i find what does work positive each time.
we find a time together that work's in our schedule. I have never had the issue of them not wanting to do it or do i tell them to do it , they just do it, like their daily chores they want to finish so they can do the next activity, practice, lesson, whatever...the younger one needs more quidance of course.
If we get homework done at a certain chld for each child's schedule we do not have to worry about getting it done, it get's done.
they check for their own mistakes, i do not do it for them, they correct their own mistaked i do not do it for them, iam just involved in the process. .
Do you allow them to turn in homework with mistakes on it?
Isnt that the truth my fourth grader had a science fair and he was the only one in his class that actually did it himself, it was obvious.
I think you are truly confusing my philosophy toward's homework. I have never done my child's homework or their project's ect becasue Iam involved...they do it themselves.
I totally disagree, think homework is a very important part of my child's education process.
My children are responsible and independent for their own homework becasue they start and finish homework without being told in a consistant neat and timley manner. My oldest many times has his homework done befor he get's home from school, so he reviews, studies and reads.
i think i see the difference - we have not nor will we ever make homework a focus of our lives. your posts are getting very confusing to me - on the one hand it sounds like you are saying your kids are free to do their homework when and where they want and then on the other you are setting a time for homework to be done and even if you are finished with homework you will spend that set amount of time doing some form of school work. homework needs to be done, homework can show a parent what the kids are learning in school, although it is only one of many ways, but it isnt the be all and end all of my childrens education. my oldest never had homework until 4th grade, that didnt prevent me from being involved in her education. if you notice, in most classes homework is a very small percentage of the overall grade, because in the big picture of education that is about what it is worth. in my oldests calculus class they are assigned homework, if they need the practice they do it if they understand it and dont need the practice, it is not required - her teacher understands that doing homework just for the sake of doing it accomplishes nothing. Jennie
but i will ask again what if they dont want to do it at 7 but rather at 4 or 5 and what if they are not finished at 7:30. you keep saying in a neat and timely manner, can you please explain what you mean by a timely manner - so what if it takes them two hours to do it or 10 minutes. there are nights my 2nd grader couldnt finish her homework in 30 minutes and others where she has it done in 10 - what is she supposed to do, quite before it is finished on the nights she has more than 30 minutes or sit and twiddle her thumbs on nights when she doesnt have much. i dont understand the importance on time - homework takes however long it takes. the amount of time it takes is going to be so dependant upon the individual child. for years i have heard parents complain our school gives too much homework, my kids dont spend that much time doing homework, but i realize that what may take them 10 minutes could be taking another child 1 hour Jennie
you have how many kids. say you have 4 i dont recall if that is correct or not, but what if all 4 of them want to do their homework at a different time - how do you accomplish anything other than homework from the time they get home until they go to bed. and what if when they want to do it just will not work with your schedule. like i have said, my 2nd grader does her homework, brings it to me when she has a question or when she is finished and i look over it, ask questions if needed, sign it and give it to her to put back in her backpack. she knows the consequences of not doing it, and they come from school not from me. some nights she may do it over the course of the night, finishing one work sheet taking a break and then moving on to another an hour or so later - as long as it gets done Jennie
