hello everyone!! i just read the cnn article on how burnt out and guilty the working mom is...and how hard it is to incorparate "quality" time...and all i can say is WILL YOU COME OFF IT PLEASE!! i work-40 hours a week; sometimes 6 days a week to get all my hours...and i have 2 children-7 and 3...and you know what-every day during the school year, i walk my dd to school...i volunteer at my dds school-in her classroom and on field trips-i have the last 2 years and plan to do more of the same this coming year...i keep the house clean-do the dishes and laundry, go grocery shopping, etc. and you know what-neither of my kids feel slighted. we just took a week long vacation where we went to an amusement park and then to visit my sil for a few days...they have a lil shallow pool-and i go "swimming" with them often-usually before i go off to the adult world of work...we go on shopping trips with my mom and visit a cousin who has a huge pool and the adults play cards outside on the deck when the kids swim...we play games, we take walks, we go to parks...it just boggles my mind. yes i get tired-and yes there are days i wish i didnt have to go in to work...but then theres days that i cant wait until i go in-some women are meant to stay at home and theyre happy doing it...and some women are meant to work outside the home-i need that adult stimulation-i need my friends and my friends are all behind that deli counter with me...again i dont feel my kids are slighted in the least-my own mom was a stay at homer and she didnt volunteer at school and we never took the kinds of trips and outings my kids are lucky enough to have on a regular basis...i dont feel guilty when im at work-i dont think being a working mom hurts my kids...im getting sick and tired of hearing how unhappy working moms are, or how guilty i should feel cuz im not with my kids 24/7...maybe im the exception...or maybe the media focuses too much on the exceptions and a lot of working mommies feel like me...??? take care!!

raising hand, yes my child,dd1 did receive tutoring last year for taks. i think it was a valuable, fantastic thing that she dealt with remarkably. but no,i don't know if *alot* of people hired tutors like i did. that tutoring was my call because of my concern with her special needs.........but in all fairness, standard testing, the nclb is being made out to be a bad thing here and for the life of me,i can't understand why. can you explain, iyo, whas is wrong with the nclb? two of my children will go through the testing this year and my hope is that the same plan, same implentation will occur as did last year. i'll probably find tutoring for both girls again, too. my decision. like i said htough,8+ months out of the year, teachers don't teach to that test, either.
thanks for sharing how standard testing is administered there..it's my opinion that the public school prepares our kids with drills because they recognize the importance of it. kids must pass this to be promoted so it's huge. i suppose nclb would defeat it's purpose if it didn't prepare each and every child for the test. testing isn't only for the kids who will soar through it,have no problems passing it you know.
So you heard that expression? That's all I was getting at.
And I can tell from the way you "speak" on our board now as opposed to a while ago that you are the happiest *I've* ever known you to be! That's a wonderful, glorious thing. I am not judging you ~ just trying to oppose Gr8teful's argument.
Again, uggghhh. Do you really not see the reason I brought that up?
?? Do they have Gifted programs in Greece or not? Is this a difficult question?
And you're right I know little of LDs especially since we've thankfully had no need. We did examine and intensively consider the Gifted program in our oldest child's school and rejected it as unnecessary, among other things, lol!
if you're comparing ld to gt,why? you know it is tougher for the disabled child to meet benchmark than the kid who soars, right?
nclb is a pretty ok thing from where i'm sitting. ymmv.

I believe *giftedness* itself as it is used in the schools today is a farcical theory. It's a joke. So the idea of Twice Exceptional is even more ridiculous, because of the whole idea of being gifted, not the LD.
Didn't children in your school with high IQs somehow manage to graduate despite the absence of Gifted programs in the decades you were in school? Do you really think children in gifted programs today could hold a candle to da Vinci or Einstein?
There's high IQ. And there are schools that are failing children. But to mislabel the group in failing schools who have high IQs to be "gifted" is a laugh. I find it funny.
I totally believe Special Ed is warranted and absolutely understand lots of people truly have LDs. No problem.
But the Twice Exceptional farce does enhance the stigma applicable to Special Ed.
