hello everyone!! i just read the cnn article on how burnt out and guilty the working mom is...and how hard it is to incorparate "quality" time...and all i can say is WILL YOU COME OFF IT PLEASE!! i work-40 hours a week; sometimes 6 days a week to get all my hours...and i have 2 children-7 and 3...and you know what-every day during the school year, i walk my dd to school...i volunteer at my dds school-in her classroom and on field trips-i have the last 2 years and plan to do more of the same this coming year...i keep the house clean-do the dishes and laundry, go grocery shopping, etc. and you know what-neither of my kids feel slighted. we just took a week long vacation where we went to an amusement park and then to visit my sil for a few days...they have a lil shallow pool-and i go "swimming" with them often-usually before i go off to the adult world of work...we go on shopping trips with my mom and visit a cousin who has a huge pool and the adults play cards outside on the deck when the kids swim...we play games, we take walks, we go to parks...it just boggles my mind. yes i get tired-and yes there are days i wish i didnt have to go in to work...but then theres days that i cant wait until i go in-some women are meant to stay at home and theyre happy doing it...and some women are meant to work outside the home-i need that adult stimulation-i need my friends and my friends are all behind that deli counter with me...again i dont feel my kids are slighted in the least-my own mom was a stay at homer and she didnt volunteer at school and we never took the kinds of trips and outings my kids are lucky enough to have on a regular basis...i dont feel guilty when im at work-i dont think being a working mom hurts my kids...im getting sick and tired of hearing how unhappy working moms are, or how guilty i should feel cuz im not with my kids 24/7...maybe im the exception...or maybe the media focuses too much on the exceptions and a lot of working mommies feel like me...??? take care!!

Are you saying that you don't think that there are any bad public schools, only lazy kids?

my dd was never going to skip a grade, academically she would have been fine but she only made the cutoff by 10 days so she was already one of the youngest in her class and for her to be a whole year younger yet was never something we considered. and now as she starts her senior year i am even more thankful we never considered skipping a grade in the younger years. no matter how bright she was and is she was still a small child and did not need to be hanging out with kids who were up to two years older than she was. if you ask most people skipping a grade is rarely a good choice for the kid.
sorry your gt program just consisted of extra homework, ours wasnt that way. and once she got to middle school she really didnt need the gt program as she was able to take advanced classes, especially in math.
it is too bad all people and school districts dont want to afford all kids the same acccess to an education that meets their potential - but i am glad we live in one that does. i knew we made the right choice when we moved here but hearing about some of the schools others have to live with really drives home what a great choice it was.
i dont know anyone who would choose to plant flowers over educating a child - what i sad comment on priorities.

She might have meant compete, but really I shouldn't guess.

There is no change without criticism of an existing system.

some public schools deserve bad raps, most do not. i dont give texas schools a bad rap they just were not what i as a parent felt was the appropriate place for my child to get an education. do you not make parental choices for your children all the time based on what you feel is best for them. my dd academic success was never the issue, she never made less than an a and the one time she took the nclb test in texas she missed 2 questions - total. i would never leave my child in a school, or anywhere else for that matter, where i felt they were not going to achieve the best possible outcome. i htought all parents felt that way. my children and my childrens education is too important to expect them to just float along and take the good with the bad, when the bad is something that as a parent i felt was detrimental.

The legislation for Special Education to be included in every school was to appease parents with children who had special needs.

So your district has a bad gifted program. Interesting, but hardly a reason to decide that all such programs are "farcical." Also, if your dd was allowed a skip that is considered gifted accommodation as well. It is part of having a gifted program.

I am pretty sure she is using "handicapped" to mean "learning disabled."
