hello everyone!! i just read the cnn article on how burnt out and guilty the working mom is...and how hard it is to incorparate "quality" time...and all i can say is WILL YOU COME OFF IT PLEASE!! i work-40 hours a week; sometimes 6 days a week to get all my hours...and i have 2 children-7 and 3...and you know what-every day during the school year, i walk my dd to school...i volunteer at my dds school-in her classroom and on field trips-i have the last 2 years and plan to do more of the same this coming year...i keep the house clean-do the dishes and laundry, go grocery shopping, etc. and you know what-neither of my kids feel slighted. we just took a week long vacation where we went to an amusement park and then to visit my sil for a few days...they have a lil shallow pool-and i go "swimming" with them often-usually before i go off to the adult world of work...we go on shopping trips with my mom and visit a cousin who has a huge pool and the adults play cards outside on the deck when the kids swim...we play games, we take walks, we go to parks...it just boggles my mind. yes i get tired-and yes there are days i wish i didnt have to go in to work...but then theres days that i cant wait until i go in-some women are meant to stay at home and theyre happy doing it...and some women are meant to work outside the home-i need that adult stimulation-i need my friends and my friends are all behind that deli counter with me...again i dont feel my kids are slighted in the least-my own mom was a stay at homer and she didnt volunteer at school and we never took the kinds of trips and outings my kids are lucky enough to have on a regular basis...i dont feel guilty when im at work-i dont think being a working mom hurts my kids...im getting sick and tired of hearing how unhappy working moms are, or how guilty i should feel cuz im not with my kids 24/7...maybe im the exception...or maybe the media focuses too much on the exceptions and a lot of working mommies feel like me...??? take care!!

"a handicapped child will never, ever have a chance to meet benchmark if we concentrate evenly with the child who soars."

How so? In my boys' school we "concentrate evenly" on children with disabilities, "gifted" children and everyone else and I see the vast majority of all children soaring.

Actually, there is quite a bit of over lap between gifted and children with disabilities, the two populations are not mutually exclusive.

wow, missed two questions. you mean she only got two wrong, jlkuhnke? do you realize how great that is? she's the star pupil every teacher would love to have,i'm sure. tell me,what's so wrong with those results and how far,iyo do you think public schools should go to accomodate kids who soar through testing? there can't be one assigned standard for the bright kids and another for the not so bright kids, right? you won't even find that in private schools. er,wait. private school kids tend to all think alike, anyway so standard testing does apply to all.

i want my kids to thrive in school settings, too but my aim is not perfection. that doesn't exist.

She was not complaining about the results her dd got on the testing.

beats me -- technically Liza goes to a private school but the thought of every single child in the school thinking the same way is a little weird. Even the good sister's of St. Catherine's don't encourage that kind of automoton thinking.

liza is there for more than just academics, right? i'm talking about ppl who swap private for public because public standards aren't good enough...and think about it. private schools,in general have a reputation for having a much more accelerated curriculum than public which translates to more above average enrollees. public school puts up with children from all learning spectrums.

*shrug* I dunno, she's there b/c I wanted her ina school that wasn't dependent on either of our addresses. She there b/c I like the uniforms. She's there b/c they're strict wiith her and have a tough code of behavior. She's there b/c the class sizes are small and she won't be lost in the crowds of a huge city school (although the elementary schools in our city have excellent reputations, I have no quibble with them in that regard). But I don't for a minute think all the kids there think alike! there are children with learning disabilities there, there are children who attend the readiness program before moving on to 1st grade, there are children like Liza who attend special support groups for dealing with divorce, there are children who are athletes and children who are singers and children who ar studios and children who are not, there are children who speak no english and children who have lived here their whole lives and what I have loved about this school is that they seem to celebrate all of them.
