Ok, with all the wedding talk and what to give for gifts, I am NOW, after going to weddings for almost 20 years-lol! invited to an outdoor wedding in someone's home.
Here is the scenario:
Bride and Groom (she 22, he 36)
Living together for over 3 years
Groom-12 year old son
Bride and Groom-have a 3 year old and she is due with their 2nd in August
Wedding:
At her mother's house-catered food from restaurant

I know in other posts I said I would probably give the same as a sit down reception but we were orally invited to this wedding so I assume they are doing this just to get married before the 2nd child arrives. I have NO clue now what to do about a gift-lol!!

Thanks. That is because they can dish it out but they can't take it.

LOL! We were just talking about this at my Mom's yesterday. I didn't get to go to my own baby shower because when the day came, I had a day-old child. He was born 5 weeks ahead of schedule.

Well if that is not your tradition, then you do not understand.

We were poor young kids when we got married but that did not mean we were looking for hand-outs. We made it on our own on very little but we were happy.

Who is going to stop them? Emily Post? Most of the moms I know host the bridal and baby showers by me. I basically "hosted" my sister's bridal shower but my mom insisted on paying.

Really? I did go to one in Florida and it was the same as NY. I thought that was because the groom and family were originally from NY. I will be going to another wedding in FL this year so I will see how that one will be. I know it is in a catering hall.
My mom lives down south and the ones she has gone to are 1 hour punch and cracker receptions.

That's horrible. I hope that is not the reason my parents paid for my wedding!!

I agree. This is the one day you are the princess or queen (whatever you want to be called!). I remember my dh "hiding" me in our bridal cocktail hour so people passing by the door would not see me yet until we were introduced (alot of people did not come to the church as we had a large span of time between the church and reception). I thought it was very sweet of him. He wanted to show me off and that made me feel beautiful.

Isn't it funny! You think due date, means due date so you think you have plenty of time!!

Your traditions are just fine -- they are your traditions. But to say that they are the height of sophistication is going to get some serious eye rolls. Weddings are allowed to be fun and have some silly, unsophisticated traditions.

I agree and we had some silly things too in our wedding. Never said every wedding has to be the cookie cutter wedding but ours was close to that and we and our guests had the best time. Probably because we had a great dancing crowd too-lol!! The main intention was to be married and then have a great time celebrating our marriage. We did both and I would never regret it.
My sister didn't like many of the traditional things and did not do them. Her wedding was very sophisticated.
