Ok, with all the wedding talk and what to give for gifts, I am NOW, after going to weddings for almost 20 years-lol! invited to an outdoor wedding in someone's home.
Here is the scenario:
Bride and Groom (she 22, he 36)
Living together for over 3 years
Groom-12 year old son
Bride and Groom-have a 3 year old and she is due with their 2nd in August
Wedding:
At her mother's house-catered food from restaurant

I know in other posts I said I would probably give the same as a sit down reception but we were orally invited to this wedding so I assume they are doing this just to get married before the 2nd child arrives. I have NO clue now what to do about a gift-lol!!

Ok. So why would *I* be self-conscious? I didn't have ragged cuticles or calcium spots. Did you assume I did? Why?

I just feel like this escalation of parties is a bit out of control -- if you have a SHOWER that is more elaborate than some weddings then what's expected of the WEDDING? this excess just is way too much for my New England sensibilities LOL

Well, that's why it's a "debate" board. You claim "X, Y or Z is always true", and you get, "Maybe sometimes, but not always". Lots of things are true sometimes, but very little is true always.

You didn't say you wanted it too, it seemed like it was all about him.
A husband having the hots for his wife is not selfish but for a woman to not care about how she looks on the most important day of her life just because everything will come undone anyway is silly. How long will the DH have the hots for the wife if that keeps up?

You didn't have a manicure or give yourself a manicure, how presentable could your nails have been?

But don't we all know plenty of people who would love to be single and are willing to pay big bucks for the privilege?

Nope, the showers that I have attended have been low-key compared to the weddings.

I'm a nail biter -- and when my ex proposed I had bitten nails and ragged cuticles -- just like when I got married -- at that time he was the last person I was self conscious around -- if he couldn't take me ragged cuticles and I wouldn't have been marrying him. (and I'm fairly sure 'ragged cuticles' were not on our divorce decree as the reason for the split LOL)

I didn't realize untl years later that brides did all this hair getting done nails getting done spa going to -- and it NEVER occurred to me to hire someone to do my makeup! I'd been in theater for years if I coulnd't slap a little eyeshadow on myself then what good was I? I even had a phot of me in my raggedy bathrobe sittin gat my little makeup table in my parents house the morning of my wedding doing my makeup with my hair wet and hangning down my back.

No, because it was kind of a tongue-in-cheek joking comment. It was true, but it was made in a joking manner.

With my dh, it is never all about him.

Ummm, where did you get "because everything will come undone anyway"? Did you get that from "the big black box of fantasy statements that do nothing to support my argument?" (btw, hazel shops at that same store)

Well, almost 4 years now.

Ragged cuticles might not have been a reason, but it might be smaller thing that leads to bigger reasons in the future.
