Ok, with all the wedding talk and what to give for gifts, I am NOW, after going to weddings for almost 20 years-lol! invited to an outdoor wedding in someone's home.
Here is the scenario:
Bride and Groom (she 22, he 36)
Living together for over 3 years
Groom-12 year old son
Bride and Groom-have a 3 year old and she is due with their 2nd in August
Wedding:
At her mother's house-catered food from restaurant

I know in other posts I said I would probably give the same as a sit down reception but we were orally invited to this wedding so I assume they are doing this just to get married before the 2nd child arrives. I have NO clue now what to do about a gift-lol!!

Makes me wonder what he supposes the purpose of religion to be, if not to be square with God, who I'm sure would prefer families to stick together.

I agree with you. Money spent on traveling and seeing many different places is well spent, too. I think traveling can be very important. These days it costs quite a bit to travel.

That's the one! it's been a staple in our house since Liza was 3 -- she reads chapter books these days but every now and then sh'ell pull out good old Cinder Edna for a chuckle!

I try and have a balance of spending AND saving. I am not impressed if someone has tons of money in the bank and does not spend a dime. There is times to save for your future and there are times to be a little generous to the people you care about. A family of 4 who thinks it is ok to give a couple $50 for a wedding but CAN afford it, is cheap to me and not really enjoying what life is all about.

What does that have to do with the price of wedding receptions? A less expesive wedding reception is not less enjoyable (to me, at least). Therefore I didn't sacrifice any fun, happy life experience or anything else positive by having a less expensive one. That's the part you are missing. You are assuming that people who spend less on a wedding reception have sacrificed something fun in the name of savings and that just isn't true.

<<I have been on these boards and there have been people who claim to be millionares and try to impress people with that. That does NOT impress my unless you are ALSO living life. Money in the bank will do nothing for you when you are gone. >>

Again,Who are you talking about?
