Ok, with all the wedding talk and what to give for gifts, I am NOW, after going to weddings for almost 20 years-lol! invited to an outdoor wedding in someone's home.
Here is the scenario:
Bride and Groom (she 22, he 36)
Living together for over 3 years
Groom-12 year old son
Bride and Groom-have a 3 year old and she is due with their 2nd in August
Wedding:
At her mother's house-catered food from restaurant

I know in other posts I said I would probably give the same as a sit down reception but we were orally invited to this wedding so I assume they are doing this just to get married before the 2nd child arrives. I have NO clue now what to do about a gift-lol!!

I love to travel and wish we could do more but it is expensive, especially with 2 kids. We do have many places in mind when the kids get older and move out-lol!!
We have traveled in the past and I don't regret spending one dime doing it. They are memories that will last us forever.

I give nice gifts too. The difference is, I don't need to verify that somebody spent X$/plate before I'm willing to give a nice gift.

Who did nothing with their life? Other posters are just talking about having less expensive wedding receptions. For some reason, you have decided that "less expensive" also means "less fun" which is just plain incorrect.

That doesn't answer the question she and I have each asked you several times. Who are these people that act in such a manner?

I'll have to disagree. Maybe that family of four realizes that the relationship they have with the bride/groom isn't worth more than $50. And they'd rather take the other $250 and do something MEANINGFUL with it. Like give to an poor family member. Or donate to their church. Or toss in another night on their Mexican vacation. Or or or or

I could never be comfortable spending 38K on a wedding, but it has nothing to do with saving money or not enjoying life. But then again, I've never wanted to be "cinderella for a day." I know there are women who've been thinking about what kind of wedding they want their whole lives, and I suspect those are the women who want lavish weddings. That's just not me.

Hmmm, if you gave $50 gifts at weddings instead of $300 ones, I bet you might be able to afford a trip or two.

<<I try and have a balance of spending AND saving. I am not impressed if someone has tons of money in the bank and does not spend a dime. There is times to save for your future and there are times to be a little generous to the people you care about.>>

AGAIN, what is that you are doing with your money that makes your life so much richer than the people that you are putting down?

<<I don't think it is very impressive when someone says they have this much or that much money in the bank and did nothing with their life. >>

Again, Who has said this?

This is what his rabbi later told him, I am told.
