Ok, with all the wedding talk and what to give for gifts, I am NOW, after going to weddings for almost 20 years-lol! invited to an outdoor wedding in someone's home.
Here is the scenario:
Bride and Groom (she 22, he 36)
Living together for over 3 years
Groom-12 year old son
Bride and Groom-have a 3 year old and she is due with their 2nd in August
Wedding:
At her mother's house-catered food from restaurant

I know in other posts I said I would probably give the same as a sit down reception but we were orally invited to this wedding so I assume they are doing this just to get married before the 2nd child arrives. I have NO clue now what to do about a gift-lol!!

I have six nephews -- 1) they're lucky if I remember their birthdays and 2) they'r REALLY lucky if they get a $15 Barnes and Noble gift card.

Please explain.

Still doesn't have anything to do with enjoying life or actually this discussion.

No there doesn't. I don't have a "standard" amount or standard gift. I, in general, will give more to the people whose realtionship means more to me. But that might not always happen. I've had people very close to me get married that I din't give a gift to at all, due to the logistics surround their marriage/wedding. Or due to my own personal finances at the time. Or due to the type of gift I gave (i.e. more sentimental value than $$$ value).

Some of my best experiences in life have been FREE. It doesn't always take money to have a great, rewarding experience.

I don't have a "standard" either -- what I choose to give on special occassions depends upon what my life is like at the moment, the relationship I have with the person or persons, and often whats' on sale at Pier 1 or the Crate and Barrel outlet... ;-)

"I'd rather have a simple, inexpensive wedding and use the rest for an awesome honeymoon or put it towards a mortgage."

I already had a mortgage and enough for an awesome honeymoon, plus a fairly expensive wedding.

"I absolutely cannot imagine starting a marriage off after stressing for months over things like table decorations and napkins. Seriously, if others like that sort of thing, more power to them. The whole idea makes me cringe."

There's a happy medium between cake and punch after the ceremony and the $100,000 extravaganza.

"spent it freely "

Man I love how people with money use this phrase -- I haven't "spent anything freely' in my life -- usually it comes along with "well we/I do this we can cut out this but if we cut out that then we can't do that..." and then I end up paying the bills and consoling myself with a pint of ben and jerry's in the corner (washed down that that chardonnay the kids aren't supposed to watch me drink...) LOL

<<Yes, I live near the biggest city in the world but let me tell you, I have personally have never been to the statue of liberty!>>

I didn't know that the statue of liberty was in Seoul, I thought it was in NYC.

I believe in playing tourist in my own city just as I enjoy others.
