Thank you. I totally agree with you. Everyone does follow the same "guidelines" by me too and I never thought twice about them.
I absolutely have NO problem saving money if I need to go to a wedding. I would like to give the couple a nice gift to start off their lives (even if god forbid they lived together before and have "things") and I usually don't have the money just sitting around to be spent.
I guess this is how we were brought up. I believe in bringing a gift to every party I am invited to. If I can't afford one, I don't go, plain and simple. I was brought up that people who take and not give are basically moochers. They will do anything to save a buck. My fil is EXACTLY like this. I KNOW they must have tons of money in the bank as they never spend a dime and I know they make about the same amount of money we make, have no mortgage, kids are older and they never buy new things.
There is a point where someone is so poor but I guess I really never knew someone like that. My friends and family know the proper thing to do when it comes to parties.

What "rules"? Each wedding I have gone to they have done different things but overall it is the same basis.

Good Point. How could they though as they don't write down how much they got from anyone??!!
The problem is that they usually get gifts at their weddings so they have no clue what it means when you get money.

It seems it's the "thought that counts" when it comes to gifts. So, i guess I won't hear another complaint about a fruitcake for the holidays, lmao.

I know...I was joking right back....I have ALWAYS (long long before this discussion) found the whole obsession with wedding dos an don'ts and 'musts ' and "havetos" really pretty funny. But I would hazard that outside of Boston, the italian enclaves of Providence and some sections of Connecticut (which is sort of pseudo new england anyway) New England brides are a pretty practical no nonsense bunch.

ironically Liza's 2nd grade teacher is getting married today (Liza just finished 2nd grade) and she invited the WHOLE grade (60 kids) to her ceremony and asked Liza and another little girl to bring up the gifts at the ceremony. Liza is beside herself and tickled to death.

i'm half italian my friend...the italian side of my family is firmly entrenched in New Haven and I've been to MANY italian weddings...so maybe it's something that isn't a tradition in New England b/c I've never seen it. As a matter of fact the last wedding I went to last fall joined a HUGE Italian family from Watertown with another HUGE Italian Family from Watertown and there was no 'viennese' hour...(there was also no band) but there were enough bridesmaids and grooms to have a pick up game of baseball on the beach if we had wanted...oy.
