"That wasn't my personal experience. We both need a lot of alone time, and were perfectly happy not spending all or even most nights together, even once we were engaged."
You know I totally get this. Kelly and I are an anomaly in the lesbian community - together for 3 years and still living apart with no plans to do otherwise until Liza is much older. Everytime we thinking about buying a place together we chicken out when we start talking about things like closet space and decorating styles...;-)
to the nearest THOUSAND??? i can tell you no way no how in 1989 did my ex husband and I receive $1000 when we got married. a few hundred maybe but I can't be sure... we did get lots of our fancy schmancy china, silver and crystal though.... all of which I got in the divorce of course...;-)
I guess so, although I have relatives in New England and their weddings have always been pretty much the same. But maybe that's just my family.
But it's interesting that we seem so materialistic here. My inlaws are from elsewhere and I think some of their weddings are worse because they invite a zillion people and then don't take care of them. There's one buffet line and one bartender for about 400 guests. And the partial cash bar- (My father literally gasped in horror at that one, lol). So maybe the gifts are smaller, but there are many more of them and the family is putting much less into the wedding.
So it's not just me thinking that?LOL When I got married in 1992, I think we got about $500 in cash in addition to a bunch of gifts. I don't remember much about the whole thing (haven't seen any of those gifts since 1993 and honestly, the whole wedding/marriage is just like a blurry bad dream anymore) but I do remember being stunned that we got even that much in gifts. I'm not a wedding-y person so I had no clue what to expect there.
And FTR, no, we didn't have a "traditional" wedding (and even so it was *much* more of a production than I wanted it to be) but I don't really think that made a difference WRT to gifts.

"I've concluded it's primarily a Long Island/New York (some parts)/Connecticut thing and a class thing, based on this thread."
