I guess it is just a regional thing. I have never, in the past 20 years I have gone to weddings, ever go to one that was a cash bar. There was one that had a tip jar on the bar and I thought that was digusting.

Obviously they do feel obligated, as do you when you are a "guest."

I agree. If the host says not to bring anything after she is asked can the guest bring something, then I wouldn't. OTOH, to have a guest bring something and the host is totally surprised should not give her an anxiety attack.

DH's brothers and cousins, who all got married in the mid 1990s, all got about $10K in cash total for their weddings.
