I guess us LIender's are pretty pushy-lol!! I am not going to deny that but I guess that is just how we were brought up here and never thought about it twice. I always say "no" when someone asks me if they can bring something and like I said before 99% of the time people do anyway.
Of course they are going to accept it. that *is* the gracious thing to do, lol. Why do you not see it as gracious to abide by the wishes of the hostess? I guess its hard for me to see that as being okay-but maybe it IS regional, I dont know.
I really think it is a regional thing. Italians always want to feed everyone all the time too so that might be it (kind of like in My Big Fat Greek Wedding when the mother made everyone eat when they weren't hungry-lol!) also-lol!!
I would never bring something that would mess up the meal. I know which of my friends are finicky about that and I'll bring wine or something that they can consume later. We just always bring something- no matter how much the hostess tells us not to. She'll do the same when she comes to our house.
No-lol!! We were pretty boring then I guess. We went to 2 other couples and 1 dissed us and went into another limo when we left! We stopped at the beach, it was too cold and then my boyfriend (now dh) just slept my parents living room couch that night! We went out the next day by ourselves as my friends didn't have enough room in the van they were going to Great Adventure in for us!! We had a good time though so that is all that matters I guess!
I'm in the mid-Atlantic and I don't know the whole "cover your plate" rule so that doesn't apply here. My parents paid for our reception and my in-laws paid for the booze (which was the tradition back when I got married 11 years ago). My father loves to throw a party so both my wedding and my sister's wedding were pretty nice weddings. If my in-laws hadn't offered to pay the booze bill, my parents would have. My father never would have hosted a party with a cash bar (now he's the Italian side but they love to party too!).
I think wine is a very nice thing to bring. Or maybe a small box of chocolates for the hostess-something for later, not intended to be put alongside the dinner she planned.

It was the 80's. The drinking was the least, the very least of it.

And you didn't drink? Good girl!!
