Whether you or I care or how long ago it was don't really affect whether cash bars are or aren't tacky. Imo, cash bars are simply a way for cost-conscious couples to give with one hand and take away with the other. To me, the best plan is to serve something you can afford in unlimited amounts.

the key words being in YOUR opinion and "to YOU"

that sentiment doesnt' apply to me. I don't think what you think bout cash bars. To me they're just fine both as a guest and a host. Which is why I don't CARE...

and I REALLY don't care about my long ago wedding, especially as I argue this morning with my ex husband over the June summer camp payment and think "and I married this schmuck why?"

True, my opinion is only that. But when we're making these choices, it's always good to keep in mind we might be kidding ourselves that they're the right thing to do when in fact it's just for our convenience. And the fact that others do the same thing doesn't always make it right, either.

but if I do it and it's ok with my friends and they do it and its ok with me...truly nothing else matters.

last fall Kelly and I had bck to back weddings to go to --one of her friends and one of mine -- on the her friends wedding she said "i'll buy your drinks today" and on the way to my friends wedding I said "I'll buy YOUR drinks today" and neeither of us thought for a second we'd be getting any alchohol for free. At both weddings there was a cash bar -- on wedding had water and ice tea on the tables the other had wine and water on the tables along with the cash bar. it was all good and we were all happy. and no one was kidding ourselves about anything b/c IT DIDN'T FREAKING MATTER.

"I don't care" has never been much of a debate tactic, especially since once you're posting, it's clear you actually do.

We get used to a lot of tacky things and think nothing of them, like people having loud conversations on their cell phones right next to us on trains. We might throw up our hands over it, and we might even do it ourselves; still tacky as heck!

That's why having a reception at a hotel where guests are staying overnight can be a good idea.
