Our cocktail hour and viennese hour was unlimited. The entree was a sit down meal. I personally do not remember from 14 years ago so I can't answer that.
I am a pretty quiet person sober or drunk so you wouldn't be seeing me get obnoxious. I don't think there is anything wrong with having a good time. I don't get many nights out anymore so if I want to have a few drinks with the girls, I will do that. We are not going out someplace where no other drinking is going on so we are not bothering people who are eating dinner someplace, etc. I would not annoy people because I do not want to be annoyed when I go out.
You know exactly what I mean though right? Kelly and I were out at our (one) local gay bar on my birthday and there was this group of women there and that was ALL THEY DID...they shouted "WOOO!" at one another across the bar all night... Kelly leans over and says "clearly they're Rhodes scholars on a break from their academic research..." LOL
I'm 45 and have been bringing 6 packs and wine bottles to peoples' parties for a quarter century by now. And other people have brought the same to mine. My parents are in their 70's and bring bottles of wine to other peoples' parties, as is brought to theirs. There is no automatic convention that one naturally abandons the potluck practice as one ages.
YES!!! The first person who comes into my head is the couple that bounced the check at our wedding. She is SOOOO loud and obnoxious with or without drinking-lol!! She actually behaved herself that night and she just got the crowd going without being annoying!

Good points. If the alcohol runs out before the end of the party, all the better. Maybe less people will be driving "buzzed".
