Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

She doesn't need the money right now to pay for the couch.

What a snobbish thing to say. "If one cant afford to purchase a mattress..one should probably not be living on their own."

Well, it's awfully nice that you could have the option to borrow money from your parents.

I don't have an issue with used items either.

"Well try again. What is the difference? You sleep in a hotel bed because if you are away from home it isnt an option. However you have a different standard within your home. So again tell me why comparing your own toilet to a public toilet is any different than comparing a hotel bed to your personal bed is hard to understand?"

Maybe I shouldn't even mention to some people here that my son wears hand-me-down clothing (what if you can't get the fluids out!) and I borrowed a friend's breast pump.

That makes sense...it's just a totally different angle from where I was asking the question.

How is sleeping in a hotel bed different from sleeping on a used mattress? It IS a used mattress...so there's no difference. If one can sleep on a hotel mattress because nothing else is available to them, then why can't they sleep on a mattress that's been used by someone else because nothing else is available to them.

And no, I could not afford $200 for a mattress right now. Unfortunately there are other things that would take much higher priority. Another of those doing-what-you-have-to-do things.

Why is that snobbish? It isnt as though I said...If one cant afford a plasma tv they shouldnt be living on their own. If someone doesnt have the money to buy a bed I really dont see how they can pay rent or furnish an apartment. It isnt snobbish it is common sense.

Thanks for your biography. However this is where we just show we have different standards. It doesnt have to gross you out. I however feel differently.

In your opinion.

Maybe they can't afford a bed *because* they're paying for rent and all those other recurring expenses that life brings about. In the example that was given, the poster was living off of $1500/month in a very high COL area. I can't imagine there was much left over for furnishings once the bills had been paid.

And as the poster stated in her earlier post, sometimes people are in situations where have very limited, or even no, choices. It's unfortunate, but it's true. I suppose that rather than going to college and having a military career, MM could have stayed at home with her mom until some nice guy with a trailer of his own came along and swept her away. That way she wouldn't have had to strike out all on her own and live the unfathomable life of a young Naval officer/fledgling engineer. I guess there'd still be no guarantees on the previously-used bed situation, though. ;-)
