Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

They can afford a bed, just not a new one. When one can't afford NECESSITIES, then maybe one should not be living on their own ... but a NEW mattress is not a necessity. A mattress is, but not a new one.

I got my first NEW mattress when I was 23 and moved halfway across the country. I certainly didn't buy one (couldn't afford it) when I moved out of my parents' house at age 18.

I guess I would look at it differently. Say the furniture set you purchased is $2k. You could have bought a used set in excellent condition for maybe $500 and put that $1500 you saved on your credit cards, which would put you one step closer to not having any revolving debt, and having less debt puts you one step closer to your dream of not working.

Who's overthinking? You appear to be taking "I don't have $200 to spend on a bed" as "I don't have $200." That's simply not necessarily true.

The part about MM1970's hypothetical non-educated life was just something I did because I like to do that kinda thing.LOL Sorry.

I think that what was being discussed however, was purchasing new as opposed to used. I could see someone having enough to cover their deposit and rent, but not much leftover. Thats where buying a used bed for $50 might be affordable, as opposed to a new one for $500. Heck, I know people who bought blow up air mattresses (like for swimming pools, lol) for a few bucks and slept on those for awhile. You do what you have to do, and not every 18yo has the luxury of NOT moving out.

Very rarely and that is only a couple of days. The poster was talking about a long while before purchasing a new mattress for herself.
