Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

"Some people also take pride in the appearance of their homes. You can get nice furniture for not a lot of money. If I were to enter someones home and saw a stained raggedy old couch, I wouldn't want to sit there. I wouldn't know what those stains are from and frankly would be a little grossed out."

I agree. I went to someone's home one time and did NOT want to sit on their couch because it was digustingly stained and ripped.

I do VERY MUCH take pride in my home. I want it a neat, clean place that I, and my guests feel comfortable coming and staying in. I think your home is a very good investment to spend money on.

"I was renting, so it wasn't "my" toilet either."

Wouldn't you replace the toilet seat? That is usually the first thing people do when they rent or own a home.

Sure its your preference. Just as having outstanding balances on credit cards is also a preference I suppose.

Its pretty easy to tell the condition of used items, but I know you've made your aversion to anything not brand new very clear.

Anything large that we have purchased new, is not on revolving credit. I have stated that before, furniture, appliances, etc.
Yes, I would rather have new. We never had anything used when I grew up so I am not used to that. My dh had everything used and does not want to go back to the way he grew up. There is no reason for it when you are an adult and have a decent job and can pay the bills.

"The only reason I got new furniture is because my dog destroyed it. There would have been nothing wrong with it today."

And how would it be any different if the furniture was used.

Because the couch would still have wear and tear to the springs and is not going to last forever. If the used couch is 10 years old in 2007, then maybe I would get 5 or even 10 years out of it. If I bought new for a little more, I could get 20 years from 2007 out of it. I don't want to have to buy something else in another 5 or 10 years.
I also like being new since I am able to do it on the 0% interest that I do. I see nothing wrong with it.

I've never replaced a toilet seat. Since I"ve been married, I've lived in three rental houses, and four that I owned. Not once have I replaced the toilet seat. There is no reason to do so.

Really? Everyone I know does it the first day they move in. I think that actually grosses me out more than the mattress-lol! I HATE public bathrooms with a passion. I could NOT go into one without gagging when I was pregnant and when someone came over to my house (even good friends) when I was pregnant, I would go and scrub the toilet every time!

but that is what you dont seem to be getting-the money you are spending on your new items could be going towards the credit card debt you have, which would possibly mean you paying off those credit cards earlier and being one step closer to being debt free. Of course, not everyone cares about being debt free, but less debt *would* mean you would be closer to your dream of sah. So in essence, you sabotage your own dream because you cant see the forest for the trees (or the forest for the furniture perhaps...)
