Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

http://backofthebook.ca/living/2007/03/part-time-ophanages-part-2-job-only.html

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

Environmentally speaking, it is incredibly wasteful to only purchase new things. And have you ever heard of antiques?

I've never ever heard of anyone replacing a toilet seat when they move into a new place.

Paying off our cc bills will not enable me to stay home. It would be extra money, but not enough.
I did start a thread though that I might have an opportunity TO stay home. My dh was told of a job opening that would triple his pay. THEN...I could stay home as he would have medical and if I left my job, I would take my money and pay off all the bills. We will see. If it is meant to be, it will.

I am not into antiques and I will never be. There is nothing wrong if you like them, but I don't. I am into very modern contemporary styles.

Really? I didn't find that unusual.

Right and I didnt say it would enable you to sah. I said it would, however, bring you one step closer to that dream. If nothing else, it would be extra money you could put away towards an early retirement.

Oh I think we've debated this before. Hazeleyes doesnt care too much about her environmental impact....

I get more compliments on the used items I buy and refurbish than I ever do on my new stuff, its kind of funny! I have this really cool wall chalk/message board that I bought for .50 at a garage sale and re-did. Now it looks like a $100 item from pottery barn!

That's great. Your personal prejudice against used furniture and antiques has exactly what to do with there being "no reason for it when you are an adult and have a decent job and can pay the bills?"

How do you know you will get 20 years of use out of it? You didn't out of your last one. That to me seems like a long life span for a couch.

But if the life span of a couch is 20 years then if you bought a two year old one then you would have 18 more years of use out of it.

I see nothing wrong with buying new either, never debated that. I am debating that something bought new will automatically last longer than something bought used. It will not, there are too many variables.
