Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

Nope that is incorrect.

When I was talking about buying a new mattress that was in reference to hazeleyes having to justify her purchase to someone else. YOU wrote to me in post 1216 No one's asking anyone to justify a purchase...just stating that it's not really necessary.

Sorry...but a used mattress within my home would consitute that being thrown out and it would be necessary to purchase a new one.

What if you could not afford a new one? I believe mm stated that she was starting out, in DC, making 18k at the time. What would you have done in those circumstances, where the money was not available? You can't pay off a credit card with money you don't have.

I would have borrowed the money from my parents. If one cant afford to purchase a mattress..one should probably not be living on their own.

No where in that last post did I say anything about anyone buying a new mattress. Nothing. My standard of living was not the issue here. I personally would not sleep on a used mattress in my home. I would buy new one. My point (like I wrote) that if someone can not afford to buy a mattress then they shouldnt be living on their own.

If you cant afford necessities then you shouldnt be living on your own. Nothing snotty about that at all.

That's funny, since I can follow the posts all the way back to that particular post of mine, and then further, and it goes directly back to your used mattress bad/new mattress necessary thing.

I mean, whatever...your opinions are your own and that's that. I just don't get the point of trying to deny what you've said or to manipulate your own words after the fact in an attempt to backpedal...and that does appear to be what's going on, whether you intended for it to or not.

You are so funny.

It's right there. Since I was asking about being able to afford a new one, and that's what you were responding to, why would anyone have thought you meant anything *but* new in your response about not affording/not living on one's own.

Purchases of new mattresses were what wsa being discussed. If you meant, in the last post you referenced, either new or used, you should have specified that. It brings in a whole new subject and very well may have changed how the discussion played out later.

In light of the fact that there are a lot of people who start out with very little and have to collect things as they go along, it's a snotty statement. People live on their own unable to afford things even more necessary than a mattress...many times there's no choice in the matter. Can't you see how that was, at the very least, an inconsiderat, not-well-thought-out statement?

"Buying new is a good way to cut down on new materials having to be created."

Huh?

I didn't word that right I guess.

You know when you buy something new, the tag might say that this item was created entirely from new materials. If you buy used (furniture) instead of new, then new fabric is not used/create, new wood is not cut down etc.

That was what I was trying to get at. I have been pretty tired the past 2 weeks from working, so my brain might not have been completely in gear. ;)

I did actually mean buy used. Oops.

It makes sense to say it's better to buy used for that reason & keep recycling things.
