Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

The problem many of us see with the whole couch thing is that you are buying a new couch before you pay off other outstanding balances that you have. Instead of putting the money in the bank to pay off the couch when it comes due, you could be paying down on your outsanding debt and ending up ahead in the long run.

The point is we needed a new couch. I don't like sitting on one that has been destroyed and I don't want guests to do that either. 14 years, in my opinion is a good length of time to have a couch. I wasn't buying it and then a few years later decided I just wanted a new one.
I don't see why I can't pay down the cc bills (paying over the minimum each month) AND be able to live with something decent for my family.

Wow--my mom does this, and I thought she was the only person in the world who could possibly be this germ-phobic! I've never heard of anybody else doing it. Live and learn.

I KNEW I was not the only one who did this and knew people who did it-lol!

I know you don't. Many people do not think that consumer debt, for whatever reason, is a good thing. If I needed a new couch and didn't have the money for a new one, I'd buy a good clean used one before I'd go further into debt for one.

I've noticed that whenever a habit or practice is brought up that you do, but the rest of the board doesn't, you claim that everyone you know does the same thing. I find that odd & unrealistic.

You said: "If your thing is antiques or used things, then go for it. I have worked my way up from the age of 19, out of college to be able to buy nice things for my home. Most people (as least the ones I know) don't live the way they did at 18, at the age of 40. By then, you have a better job, more money and get better things."

and

"Yes, I would rather have new. We never had anything used when I grew up so I am not used to that. My dh had everything used and does not want to go back to the way he grew up. There is no reason for it when you are an adult and have a decent job and can pay the bills."

Perhaps you misspoke?

That is your preference then. I am not going deeper into debt by purchasing the new couch. I am still paying my cc bills each month, on time and more than the minimum.
