Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.
"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

So in your thinking no one is an individual in Long Island. It is a total area of keeping up with the Joneses (doing what everyone else does) & no one really even thinks of doing anything differently than eachother? Sorry, not buying it.
In my world we learn of things that family & friends are doing & sometimes we think, wow excellent idea, we should start that. Other times, the things they do we do not approve of, or do not have the money for or do not put as high of a priority on, so it might be a good idea, but we just don't bother. It runs the gamut of possibilities.
No, I do not know of people who change the toilet seats & carpet when the move in. Many times new carpet is put in shortly before the house is marketed. Some people do not have extra money for carpet and the carpet is fine, so they wait until they have the money and/or feel the need to replace carpet. Some people would replace carpet immediately and there would be more than one reason for doing so (2 come to mind--they don't like carpet and want another kind of flooring or the carpet is very warn). This would come under INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES, in my world. When we moved into our house we immediately bought a new dishwasher and refrigerator. Within a year we put a new roof on. If our higher priorirty was carpet, we would have spent our money on that instead. But to us the carpet looked ok (not new, but not terribly worn) and the other items were needed first. And in my world, different people tend to have different priorities of what to change in a house when the first move in. Those priorities are controlled both by funds and the actual needs in the house. There is not an unspoken rule in my world that you immediately change the carpet.
Most people where you live change the carpet if they move into a new house or appartment?
