Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

Why do I not like used? I just have a thing with used things from someone I do not know. I have gotten worse as I have gotten older with cleaning.

We were talking about cleanliness. Having kids and animals does not make the cleanest carpet. I know, I have both of them-lol! If I knew someone had an animal in the house I was moving into, I would take out the carpet right away.

I never heard of that. I would love to see a picture. I know I always wanted to do rag painting or something like that but never felt like I had the time.

Ah. The germs thing again. Wouldn't want to get cooties from a used table.

<< If I am only spending 35-40 dollars a season for clothes for each of my kids instead of 100-200 dollars and times that by 4 its that much more money that we can go do other things with.>>

on the flip-side of that, you have to search high and low for those bargains, scour through item after item on many, many sale racks and, probably, go to a multitude of stores.

I better spend my time going into one store and, within 20 min., have clothing for at least 2 of my daughters.

different strokes.

We try to either clean or replace those fabrics that can hold a lot of dust mites or whatever. DH has mild allergies and all the dust and other icky things that hide in carpet, couch fabrics and mattresses aggravate his allergies. We vacuum and lysol our mattress regularly. We slowly replaced carpet in our current house (you could build a small sandcastle with the crud we found under the carpet - yuck). Our couch is leather so it really just needs a wipe (hand me down from his dad, but LOVE it so much!)

If we moved, the first thing I would do is rug doctor all the carpets because it's faster and cheaper than replacing them. Then I would eventually replace most of the carpet.

The stuff that can get caught in these fabrics really is gross if you think about it. But as long as it's cleaned pretty good, then they can last a long time.

Just knowing they had an animal wouldn't be enough for me. We have a cat. It has never pooped or peed on the carpet. Hair vacuums up (shorthair cat too). In order for the animal to be the reason to replace the carpet, I'd have to know how they took care of the animal. Which I probably wouldn't. So, I'd look at the condition of the actual carpet itself.

I can't remember the name of it but DH bought some laminate flooring, that clicks together easily. It's made from wood, but very durable and easy to install. We put it in our living room and it stands up to the beating. We just need to vacuum and give it a quick swiffer.

We've always had the carpets professionally cleaned when moving in. Whether it was a rental or a purchase.

Why not? I find the hardwood floor especially kid friendly. It is much easier to clean up anything spilled. We have "oriental" carpets that cover the majority of the family and living rooms. One was inexpensive from a local rug store and one I inherited and is 150ish years old and worn in a few places but still quite beautiful.
