Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

http://backofthebook.ca/living/2007/03/part-time-ophanages-part-2-job-only.html

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

She is losing money with the couch thing because the money she is putting aside is money that is not going to pay down her other consumer debt. She isn't paying interest directly on the couch, but she is accruing interest every month on her other debt.

They have those paper covers in public bathrooms because the toilets are not disinfected between users. There is nothing out there that a good disinfectant cleaner isn't going to get rid of.

you have got to be kidding my right.....i want my home to look lived in. i grew up in a house out of better homes and gardens and i hated it. i just wanted to put posters on the walls. when i go into a house the first thing i notice is does it looked lived in - that is what i find warm and comfortable in a home. not that all the furniture matches and there are no scratches on the floor. do you really think your guests go around inspecting your floor for scratches? those people wouldnt be guests in my home

I've always thought it was childish to *need* new stuff always.

I know you're slightly anal, but you aren't the type to say that a scratch or two on a hardwood floor means that person is disgusting, right? (Actually, what is getting me about this is not that she's anal. That's fine, I know lots of anal people. It's just that she doesn't KNOW she's anal. She thinks that she's normal and everyone else is a disgusting pig.)

I used to prefer carpet. My mom had new carpet put in her house. She's not a messy person, she has no pets, she had her carpet cleaned twice a year and vacuumed regularly. She also lived alone, for the most part. After *three years*, she decided to rip out the carpet and put in hardwood. I helped her. It was absolutely disgusting under the carpet. From that day on, regardless of any other reason, I will never ever ever ever willingly have carpet in my home.

actually i pinch pennies because it is smart not because i have to. i would never buy furniture on credit. credit is for things like a car or house not for everyday living items. if i cant pay cash for a couch im not buying it - i can wait until i have saved the money to buy it. when i go into a furniture store and see the displays they have set up they look really nice in the stores but when put into a home they look cold and sterile. i want furniture that i dont have to worry about people laying on to watch tv. comfort and hominess is my main focus in my home

I don't think they would go looking for scratches but yes, I do want my home to look nice for myself first and then guests.
