Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

I've explained before that right now it is impossible to live on my dh's salary alone. We would be able to pay for our shelter, food, clothes and medicine but there would not be enough to gas up and maintain the cars and any extra things that might be needed.

Not everyone's life is cut and dry regarding having 2 incomes. That 2nd income is sometimes needed even though it might not be in your situation.

I don't know. I don't spend the evenings in their company, so I have no idea.

It may seem like a luxury to others, but it's really fairly easy to achieve, imo. The cost of having that time isn't a fraction of what it's worth.

I feel the way about chores and laundry the way I feel about alot of things "they'll be there tomorrow" so for now...let's go swim/go for ice cream/watch a movie/make popcorn/ read a book/ etc...

those are the things I spend my time doing in the evening -- I can sandwich in laundry here and there -- the other stuff is more fun and more important.

Only if you are counting time elapsed and not spent actually working on laundry.

Sure they do. You can toss a flannel shirt over anything!

You don't talk about work/family/life balance with your friends?

My parents always slept in a hotel but with only my mom now, I don't think she should have to go and spent her money to sleep elsewhere.
