Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

Heck, even if I COULD afford to sah I would not. Of course, that's just me and my family.

Yup. That's about what it felt like when I went from being a dual wohp to a single wohp....always one step away from that.

as does the privilege for me to work and earn the living that I do and add substantial financial support to and for my family.

No it doesn't, but then again I didn't state that it did.

Yes, it is.

do your stereotypes EVER end????

Our home requires TWO incomes (i know because it was a stretch to afford to stay in my home when i divorced) no matter HOW many ways you try to slice it. We do live in a higher COL area (CT) because MY FAMILY is here and my EX's FAMILY is here and they give us TREMENDOUS support that we would not find if we moved out in the sticks. As for keeping up with the Jones's, LOL.....They would be the family across the street with the sahm -- pool, 3 cars (high end), jet-skis, extra large plot of land, vacation in disney every year, etc....Nope. we don't even attempt to keep up with them -- and i've been in the same 1800 sq. ft. home for 16 YEARS (we've renovated as we've needed more space).

The answer to the first question would be, no.

i have 4 kids with a nanny/household manager....be grateful you pay only $200 per week. She costs us almost $500 per week (but she's worth every single penny!).

i have three kids and continued to teach. Each year brought increased salary, continued medical coverage, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays and vacations at home. PLENTY of time to "be with my kids".

there are many different ways to skin a cat.

Well, that's true enough; outdoor cats don't generally live long enough to experience the typical issues of old age. The average life expectancy for outdoor cats is 3-5 years, whereas indoor cats have life expectancies of 15 years or more.
