Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

"Not to the level that hazeleyes seems to know about her acquaintances."

Who are my acquaintances? My neighbors who we used to see everyday and do things with or my dh's family who I have known for 20 years?

Very true. I understand what you are saying. The point is that for the amount of the mortgages, one person working is not bringing in that amount of money for a home and to live.

Exactly. I know how much all my neighbors paid. You don't know how much their mortgage is but you know how much the house cost.

Where I come from, from a family of teachers and union workers, salaries were always known and published. Now that I work in the private sector, income is private, personal, and can not be shared with coworkers - my corporate dh always reminds me not to share our financials with anyone. Many of our friends probably make alot more money than we do, and if I knew how much, I'd probably be shocked, but not envious. shrug, I don't really care how anyone is doing except me, so I think we agree. ;-)

LOL. And they say grownups don't believe in fairy tales. I'm sure believing that one is a great comfort to you when thost "budgeted" expenses you claim to include suddenly come up with no money....

What does searching have to do with it?

Since I don't know who "a lot of people" is defined,

WIC is very much pushed in the military. Many bases have a WIC office on the base.
